Van leasing customers could make use of Start & Stop devices

Motorists and businesses that operate in urban areas will be aware of how much time they spend in heavy traffic and how much money they waste on fuel when they are stationary.

Transport for London's advice to these drivers is to switch off their vehicle's engine, as not only will this keep cash in the pockets of businesses, but will also keep pollutants from entering the environment and lowering the air quality in the city.

Van leasing customers have the option of hiring a model which can do this automatically for people. By leasing a Citroen Berlingo with e-HDI micro-hybrid Start & Stop technology, individuals and fleet managers not only reduce their fuel expenditure and lower their carbon footprint, but they can also avoid the high initial costs associated with privately purchasing a new vehicle.

The automated process kicks in as soon as the van comes to a halt, meaning idling time is cut to zero and fuel efficiency is maximised.

Citroen states that the system can improve fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent when people are driving in urban conditions.

Scott Michael, the manufacturer's commercial vehicle operations manager, said the technology was perfect for both van drivers and the environment.

"Citroen has a track record of producing low emitting LCVs (light commercial vehicles) and we are now offering van buyers even lower emission alternatives, while minimising or eliminating altogether the cost penalty usually associated with new clean fuel-efficient technology," he added.

Berlingo vans are also equipped with the unique Trafficmaster telematics package, which can further improve savings by highlighting the quickest route in heavy congestion.

Advancements such as these helped the company to be successful in last year's What? Van Awards.

The French firm took the Innovation Award due to its Business Class programme comma which made environmentally respectful and fuel efficient vehicles its focus.
